Wise or Western Union: Bridging Old and New in International Money Transfers
Western Union and Wise get framed as old guard versus new guard — a 170-year-old money transfer giant against a fintech built on rate transparency. That framing suggests an easy winner. The real numbers don't agree: across six corridors we compared head-to-head today, Western Union actually beat Wise's payout in four of them, and it isn't close to a fluke — it holds up in Sendrater's site-wide data too.
Six corridors, head-to-head, sending 100 units of the source currency today:
| Corridor | Wise Rate | Wise Fee | Wise Receives | Western Union Rate | Western Union Fee | Western Union Receives | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK → Brazil | R$6.94 | £1.50 | R$683.65 | R$6.85 | £0.00 | R$685.22 | Western Union |
| UK → India | ₹129.27 | £1.21 | ₹12,771 | ₹128.46 | £0.00 | ₹12,846 | Western Union |
| UK → Mexico | Mex$23.09 | £1.28 | Mex$2,279.12 | Mex$23.09 | £0.00 | Mex$2,308.54 | Western Union |
| UK → Nigeria | ₦1,847.38 | £1.23 | ₦182,473 | ₦1,795.22 | £0.00 | ₦179,522 | Wise |
| UK → Pakistan | PRs373.81 | £1.60 | PRs36,784 | PRs372.32 | £0.00 | PRs37,232 | Western Union |
| US → Mexico | Mex$17.14 | $2.19 | Mex$1,676.68 | Mex$16.77 | $1.99 | Mex$1,643.23 | Wise |
Look at UK → Mexico first, because it's the cleanest illustration of what's actually happening: Wise and Western Union quote the exact same exchange rate, Mex$23.09. The only difference is Wise's £1.28 fee — Western Union charges nothing on this corridor — and that fee alone is the entire reason Wise falls behind. Wise isn't losing on rate quality here. It's losing on a fee it doesn't need to charge to stay competitive.
Nigeria and the US → Mexico corridor are the exceptions, and they show the flip side of the same mechanic. In Nigeria, Wise's rate (₦1,847.38) is nearly 3% better than Western Union's (₦1,795.22) — a wide enough gap that Wise's £1.23 fee doesn't erase the advantage. On US → Mexico, Wise wins on both rate and fee. The pattern holds across all six: when Wise's rate edge is small, its fee costs it the corridor; when the rate edge is large enough, Wise wins outright.
Zooming out — how the two compare across every corridor Sendrater tracks, not just these six:
| Metric | Wise | Western Union |
|---|---|---|
| Rate Leadership Ratio (cheapest provider outright) | 40% | 46% |
| Active competitive corridors (5+ providers) | 117 | 128 |
| Corridors where it ranks in the top 3 | 47 | 59 |
Western Union, founded in 1851, isn't just present on more corridors than Wise — it's the outright cheapest option more often, too. That cuts against its reputation as the expensive, legacy choice, and it's worth taking seriously rather than assuming Wise wins by default.
Rate and fee aside, the two still serve different needs. Western Union's cash-pickup network reaches recipients without a bank account, which matters if that's how your recipient gets paid. Wise is digital-only, with multi-currency account features Western Union doesn't offer. If both work for your recipient, the corridor-by-corridor payout — not brand reputation — should decide it.
